Reality

You are sitting in an over stuffed armchair, drinking your steaming cup of coffee. You unknowingly tentatively pick it up and blow soft air on to it. You do not think much of it because it is simply obvious to try to cool down this drink that is slowly starting to burn your fingertips. By doing this you are reacting to the reality of the situation. You slowly take a small sip of the drink letting it rest on your tongue before slowly allowing the drink to slide down your throat. You then take a larger gulp knowing know that it will not burn you sensitive taste buds. Simple enough process don't you think. Imagine it this time but instead of a steaming cup of hot coffee you had cold water. Try to do all the same reactions you just did without thinking about it. You cannot. Situations like these constantly occur during scenes; having to drink a hot coffee, having to react to the phone ringing, actually baking something, all of these scenarios have to seem real to the audience or they will not believe it. I realized that you really have to imagine all of this practice with the real thing and then move onto the fake. This chapter really helped me especially while working on my mime, I would play real catch with my dog to see her reactions and see how she truly acted. The key is to bring forth you creativity and your imagination to bring reality to your work. :)
