Why?
While browsing through the small section of Theatre books in Barnes & Nobles I came across "Respect For Acting" I knew that I needed a book on any aspect of theatre but I had not been able to find one. So after sitting down (on a chair I might add, they no longer allow you to sit humbly on the floor) I slowly opened this long collection of paper and began to read. It was a bit strange because usually when reading say a fiction book I get so absorbed in it that I completely forget that I am reading and instead I feel like a I am watching a film, but it has never truley happened to a non-fiction book. It didn't exactly jump to life and I saw actors rehearsing in front of me but rather that I felt like she, Uta Hagen, was discussing this and explaining everything directly to me. Her introduction just makes you want to read more, and learn more. I feel so much more knowledgeable about acting in general. There was also a foreword in the beginning by Haskel Frankel, telling their experiences of meeting her and being in a class taught by her. Everything they say is refreshing and very moving. I hope to acquire a better understanding for acting and I really hope to further my skills. I would love to attend a summer class where all you do is act and discuss theatre, but for now reading what Uta Hagen has to say is just as well.
